Cleaner, Greener Practices and Initiatives


Constructing roads is only one part of the SHA story. Maintenance is responsible for maintaining more than 17,000 lane miles of roads and more than 2,500 bridges across the state of Maryland. In addition to regular upkeep of roadways (resurfacing, repainting lines, cleaning), SHA’s Office of Maintenance is also responsible for supporting and assisting the districts in keeping roads passable during inclement weather. Maintenance primary mission is to maintain a safe network of roads, but we also have a commitment to maintain a safe environment for all Marylanders. Reducing our impact on the environment requires us to think creatively and adopt practices that are cleaner and greener. Below are descriptions of our most significant “green” maintenance practices.
