Maryland Motor Carrier Identification Numbers

Attention Motor Carriers
Legislation enacted in Maryland in 2002 requires that every truck registered over 10,000 pounds, truck tractor and bus operated on public roads, unless specifically exempt**, must display either a US DOT or a Maryland issued motor carrier identification number by July 1, 2002. If you are a motor carrier that is not required to have a US DOT # because your vehicles do not leave Maryland and you do not handle interstate cargo, you must obtain a Maryland identification number (MD DOT #) and display it on your trucks, truck tractors and buses.

Motor Carriers that travel outside the State of Maryland must apply for a US DOT# from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Applicants may apply online at their website www.fmcsa.dot.gov ( listed under Registration & Licensing).

The Motor Carrier Division (MCD) of the Office of Traffic and Safety has been designated as the issuing agency for Maryland DOT numbers. The Motor Carrier Division issues these numbers free of charge to Maryland Intrastate Motor Carriers.

Application for Maryland D.O.T Number (FORM MCIR-150) can be obtained from our website at www.marylandroads.com or by calling 1-800-543-4564 toll free or 410-582-5734. MD DOT Numbers are not issued automatically - motor carriers must submit their applications to the Motor Carrier Division via fax or mail. (Numbers and address are on application).

US DOT #'s and MD DOT #'s must be displayed in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) part §391.21. Motor Carriers not in compliance are subject to fines.

**The following vehicles, if only operated intrastate, are exempt: Farm trucks, and farm truck tractors, farm area motor vehicles, emergency vehicles, vehicles transporting money or commercial paper, vehicles owned or operated by the State or local government, and vehicles within 15 days of their purchase.
